Drownings
Drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4 in Florida, and Florida’s drowning death rate among those children is the highest in the nation. Enough children drown in Florida annually to fill three to four preschool classrooms. In all, 485 people drowned in Florida in 2009. Florida Injury Facts: Drownings. The causes of drowning vary. At the beach, strong winds can produce dangerous waves and rip currents that can drag swimmers out to sea. Each year, swimmers drown or are injured fighting these currents, especially on beaches where lifeguards are not on duty or warning signs are not posted. (For tips on surviving rip currents, go to www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov). Theme parks and water parks present their own risks, because overcrowding can inhibit lifeguards from effectively keeping watch on everyone.
If you or someone you know owns a pool or access to any body of water, precautions must be taken to prevent injury. Local, municipal and state laws and regulations provide basic guidelines for water safety. Among the steps that should be taken are:
- Installing fences and gates
- Locking the gates
- Posting warnings
