Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen and the Story of Carlos Candelario Featured in Univision Documentary on the Impact of Pesticide Exposure
Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen is proud to bring more awareness to the moving story captured by Univision of Carlos Candelario, a young man born without arms or legs due to pesticide exposure in utero. Carlos's story underscores the impact of negligence in the workplace and the devastating effects of toxic pesticides on human health and the environment.
Francisca Herrera and Abraham Candelario v. Ag-Mart Produce, Inc., was one of the most pivotal cases in GRYC Partner Andy Yaffa’s career. Discovery in the case uncovered numerous violations by Ag-Mart, the company employing Carlito’s mother, including sub-par work conditions. During this case, Andy traveled to Washington, D.C. to testify before a Congressional Subcommittee on the treatment of workers in these situations. As a result, Ag-Mart implemented new policies to ensure its employees' safety and protection.
“There was a whole litany, a list, of the negligent acts that Ag-mart committed as it relates to Carlitos. This company didn’t tell any of the women working in the fields. They weren’t given a choice,” said Andy Yaffa in the documentary.
In addition, Andy’s work on this case was featured in the book Tomatoland, an exposé on the inappropriate mass production of tomatoes in America.
GRYC is dedicated to ensuring victims receive justice and reinforcing the urgent need for stricter regulations and protections against toxic chemicals. Carlos's story is a testament to the resilience of individuals affected by such tragedies and the importance of ongoing advocacy.
