Allergan, Inc., a global pharmaceutical company focused on developing, manufacturing, and commercializing branded pharmaceutical, is being sued by women across America for the use of its BIOCELL implants, which has allegedly been linked to a serious form of lymphoma.
Allergan, Inc. announced a worldwide recall of BIOCELL after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) called for the action following new information that its implants were tied to a vast majority of these types of cancer cases. The lymphoma is known as BIA-ALCL, an implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (i.e. a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma).
In most cases, BIA-ALCL is found in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant. However, in some cases, this can spread throughout the body.
While an individual’s risk of developing BIA-ALCL is considered low, this cancer is serious and can lead to death, especially if treatment isn’t sought immediately. In addition, the procedure to diagnose BIA-ALCL is invasive.
Moreover, the FDA stated that the risk of developing this type of lymphoma is about six times higher if an Allergan BIOCELL implant was used. Within the span of several months—from early 2019 to July 2019—reports have skyrocketed, with 116 new cases and 24 more deaths of patients using BIOCELL implants.
