As a partner at Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen, Attorney Andrew Yaffa has successfully recovered more than half a billion dollars for individuals injured due to the negligence of others. Yaffa’s skill and dedication to advocating for clients and helping them navigate the civil justice system has earned him national recognition from myriad award organizations, from Super Lawyers® to Martindale-Hubbell. Adding to his long list of achievements, Lawdragon placed Yaffa in the “Lawyer Limelight” in an exclusive interview touching on the highlights and successes of his extensive career thus far.
In his interview with Alison Preece of Lawdragon, Attorney Yaffa kept readers on the edge of their seats as he highlighted some the most unique and personal cases of his career. Yaffa recalls, the landmark case he won for a young child born without limbs due to the fact that the child’s mother was exposed to a toxic pesticide while pregnant and working in tomato fields. This groundbreaking case served as inspiration for Barry Estabrook’s book, Tomatoland.
“The truth is, with the work that you’re doing, you really do have a chance to make an outsized impact, which you have done,” Preece said in a dialogue with Attorney Yaffa. “You changed Carlito’s life, gave his family some measure of justice for their suffering, and beyond that, you saved countless others from similar harm by exposing the dangers of working with pesticides. Your career tells the tale of how much a lawyer can really do.”
Furthermore, Attorney Yaffa’s legal career includes his fight for children subjected to tragic deaths after being left in overheated vans by negligent daycare workers. Not to mention, he has fought for many patients injured by “medical tourism,” which is the practice of traveling to another city or region to receive low-cost medical services. Unfortunately, these unlicensed medical professionals falsely advertise their work as safe, subjecting many medical tourists to botched surgeries.
Preece also inquired about Attorney Yaffa’s current work representing individuals harmed by “miracle” stem cell treatments that have proved to be ineffective and dangerous. Some patients, he told Lawdragon, who receive this stem cell therapy are suddenly rendered blind or suffer brain injuries as a result. The fact that he represents clients in cases concerning tomato fields and daycare centers and is then able to pivot so effectively to fighting against medical professionals pedaling snake oil is a testament to his adaptive legal skill.
This presents the question of how Attorney Yaffa determines which cases to accept and what motivates him to do so. As with all our passionate attorneys at Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen, he explained that helping clients seek closure and the financial means to move on from whatever tragedy they were subjected to is of the utmost importance to him.
“To make their lives better, to ease that financial burden, to get them the care that they need,” Attorney Yaffa told Lawdragon. “In fact, I would tell you 100 percent of the cases we handle, we can’t fix what’s been done or what’s been lost. So, if I can bring any sense of justice, any sense of peace, where these people can attempt to move on, then I’ve done my job.”
With such an extensive career, Attorney Yaffa is one of Florida’s premier attorneys. He has helped injured individuals win justice and prevent further harm from coming to other Florida residents, as his work has effected positive change in legislation and policy. He was admitted to the International Academy of Trial Lawyers — an elite, invite-only group with a small membership of only 500 active trial lawyers. He is also a member of the Broward County Trial Lawyers Association and American Board of Trial Advocates, among others. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Florida Justice Association.
