GRYC’s History of Justice: Goldberg vs. Florida Power & Light

We always make it a point to pursue justice with the utmost care and compassion for our clients. Looking back at my career, I have worked numerous cases that all hold a special place in my heart.

One that specifically comes to mind is Goldberg vs. Florida Power & Light Company, the largest utility in the state of Florida. This case is still cited frequently in courtrooms today due to its significance within the wrongful death category.

What happened in the case was a tragic event we hope will not be replicated again. Two young mothers were each traveling at the end of a school day in Pinecrest with their two young children in the backseat. While driving away from the school, the two cars collided, and one of the children, who was only 12 years old, unfortunately died as a result of the crash.

Neither driver was to blame, as they were merely following traffic laws. Rather, we believe the fault lied with FPL.

While repairing a fallen power line, a nearby intersection light had been shut off without a single person directing traffic. When a police officer offered to help guide traffic, FPL turned him away. FPL’s negligence to perform minimal safety procedures not only cost the life of a young girl, but permanently removed her from her family.

This case illustrates the sad truth that unfortunate events happen to innocent people. At GRYC, it is our job to properly defend victims of preventable circumstances. As experienced wrongful death and medical malpractice attorneys, we make it our duty to provide support for those who are unable to support themselves.
