Common Maternal Injuries After Birth

While some women may worry about the dangers of labor and delivery, most women trust that their child’s birth will go smoothly. Unfortunately, however, maternal injuries and even deaths are becoming more common in the United States. And, surprisingly, many of these injuries happen after a woman is discharged from the hospital. Get informed on some of the most common maternal injuries after birth and what you can do if you have suffered from one.

The Injuries Mothers Suffer After Leaving the Hospital

Many women are discharged from the hospital too soon after giving birth. In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), women should stay in the hospital at least 24 hours after a vaginal delivery. However, researchers found that up to 83% of women leave before that cutoff.

This can have serious consequences on a woman’s health. When women are discharged from the hospital soon after giving birth, healthcare workers may not be able to detect health issues that may have a delayed effect. There have been many cases of women returning home after their deliveries and experiencing the following physical and psychological medical events:

  • Infections including urinary tract infection, episiotomy infection, mastitis, and other mammary pathologies and endometritis
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder from traumatic births
  • Relationship difficulties with partner and baby

The Dangers of Diabetes in Pregnancy

One common, yet little-acknowledged, cause of postpartum health complications is diabetes in pregnancy, which affects one out of every six pregnancies around the world. This includes women who have previously been diagnosed with diabetes and those who have high blood glucose levels and develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancies. When such conditions are left untreated, they can contribute to postpartum hemorrhage. Additionally, babies born to women with untreated diabetic conditions face an increased risk of neonatal death and long-term disability.

It’s up to healthcare workers to identify any risk factors a pregnant woman has and take measures to reduce the risk of complications during and after birth.
