2024 Guideline for Primary Prevention of Stroke Updated for the First Time in 10 Years
For the first time since 2014, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has updated its Guideline for the Primary Prevention of Stroke. This updated guideline provides clinicians with crucial information and strategies for preventing strokes in individuals who have no prior history of this condition.
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the U.S. According to the CDC, someone in the country suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and every three minutes, someone dies from one. Major risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes, with approximately one in three U.S. adults having at least one of these risk factors.
The new recommendations aim to help save lives and promote healthier lifestyles. Clinically, they set the standard of care for stroke prevention, emergency treatment, and long-term care. Written by clinicians for clinicians, these guidelines serve as a benchmark for responsible medical practice. A failure to follow these guidelines can lead to patient injury or even death.
If you or a loved one has suffered a stroke, it is essential to confirm that your healthcare provider followed these critical guidelines.
Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes lead to significant disability but, most important, are preventable. The 2024 primary prevention of stroke guideline provides recommendations based on current evidence for strategies to prevent stroke throughout the life span. These recommendations align with the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 for optimizing cardiovascular and brain health, in addition to preventing incident stroke.
